architecture
One of the biggest influences in my work has been Carlo Scarpa, the great Venetian architect, whose extraordinary sketches brought his design process to life. Carlo Scarpa is known for his instinctive approach of materials, combining artisanal techniques with modern production methods. His architecture is tightly linked to Venice, but it is also influenced by Japanese culture. He was obsessed by details, such as the relationship between floor and walls. His work seems to fit perfectly with its context and does not clash with the surroundings and yet is unmistakably modern.
Another influence has been the American architect Rick Joy, his work again is rooted its surroundings in this instance the desert landscapes of Arizona. My fascination with Rick Joy’s work lies in its remarkable sensitivity, precision and grace. The allure of his architecture is often quietly and seductively hidden in its sensual qualities.
My dissertation focused on the Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz, a contemporary of Le Corbusier, his work sits at the opposite end of the spectrum to other masters of modernism. Through subtle use of materials and lighting, Lewerentz work always has a story to tell and often rewards a little research to understand how the space and buildings should be read.
