urban design

Through my architectural history lectures at University I became aware of the great renaissance and city urban spaces. The seed was sown and I started to understand how urban spaces work, how the relationship between building, street and square should work. Crucially I began to understand how strategic development should work and how the planning process shapes urban spaces.

Through my work in practice I began working with masterplanners and became aware of their role and how planners can to a degree influence development. Learning how to talk and understand that ‘language’ became increasingly important as my career developed in practice.

I started to notice how strategic decisions were being made by planners who perhaps were not quite as skilled in design and I could see some problems with the urban design strategy. Being an architect with urban design training gave me a broader scope in design projects and enabled me to shape developments.
